2020 Land Rover Discovery

History/Overview

The Land Rover Discovery debuted in 2017 as a replacement for the LR4. It's a mid-size SUV available with seven seats in three rows. The Disco, as it's known casually, starts out as a five-seater.

What's New / Key Changes from Last Year

New for 2020 is a Landmark trim package that makes some of the Discovery's upscale options available at a lower price.

Available Trims

Land Rover offers the Discovery in SE, Landmark, HSE and HSE Luxury trims. All four start out with a 3.0L supercharged V6 engine, which can be optioned to a 3.0L turbodiesel in SE, HSE and HSE Luxury. The transmission is an eight-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive is standard.

Standard Features

SE trim comes with 19-inch wheels, dark grille with black surround, front and rear fixed panoramic glass roof panels, automatic high beam assist, power-folding, auto-dimming and heated side mirrors, auto-dimming rearview mirror, two-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, 360-degree parking aid, driver condition and blind spot monitoring, lane keep and parking assists, automatic emergency braking, 12-way power front seat adjustments, ambient interior lighting, 10-speaker sound system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 8.0-inch touchscreen, hands-free power tailgate and LED headlights.

Landmark trim adds 20-inch wheels, air suspension, a dynamic exterior package, brushed aluminum door and dash trim, a Meridian sound system, heated windshield washer jets, signature taillights, front fog lights, third-row seating, heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, navigation and satellite radio.

HSE trim also builds on the SE five-seater with its own 20-inch wheel design, tilt-and-slide front sunroof, three-zone climate control, interactive driver display, 10.0-inch touchscreen, InControl Touch Pro navigation, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition.

Finally, HSE Luxury builds on the HSE with a two-speed transfer case, air suspension, heated washer jets, front fog lights, seven-seat interior with power-folding third row, 14-speaker surround-sound stereo, heated steering wheel, extended leather interior, heated front and rear seats, winged front headrests and power-adjustable rear seats.

Key Options

SE trim can be optioned with a Drive package (adaptive cruise, high-speed automatic braking, traffic sign recognition), a Cold Climate package (heated washer jets, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel), a seven-seat interior, a Driver Assist package (360-degree camera views, adaptive cruise with steering assist, high-speed automatic braking, traffic sign recognition), and a Capability package that bundles a two-speed transfer case with Terrain Response and air suspension.

Landmark trim offers the Drive and Driver Assist packages.

HSE can be optioned with a Luxury Climate package (heated washer jets, ventilated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control and 16-way Windsor leather seats), and a seven-seat version adds heat to the third row. HSE also offers electric rear seat recline and power third-row seats, and the two-speed transfer case is available with an air suspension.

HSE Luxury offers the Luxury Climate package, Driver Assist package and a capability Plus package that includes a locking rear differential.

Fuel Economy

Land Rover's fuel consumption estimates for the Disco are 11.3/9.2 L/100 km (city/highway) for the diesel engine and 14.8/11.4 for the supercharged gas V6.

Competition

There are many mid-size luxury crossovers to choose from, but fewer that directly compete with the Discovery's seven-seat option. There's the Lexus GX and Audi Q7, and for similar money, a GMC Yukon or Chevrolet Tahoe has seats in three rows and can be optioned with many of the Disco's luxury features.
